Love the One You’re With

Growing up, many of us were told, “Always be true to yourself.” What does that really mean? And how do you ‘stay true’ to someone you’re not quite sure of just yet? Life is a balancing act, and each decision we make along the way helps to mold us into the individuals that we become. We may find that the decisions we make are difficult ones, and although the path we walk on is bumpy, it eventually opens into a Garden of Eden. But in order to reach that reward, we need to have stayed on that bumpy road—going through everything that needed to be experienced in order for the doors of paradise to be revealed. On the other hand, we may find that the decisions we make are not difficult at all. In that instance, you sail through life, reaping the rewards. Life—in essence—becomes your daily Garden of Eden.

Everyone’s path is different, and while the reasons for that may not be crystal clear, the stops along the way help form you as an individual. Tomorrow is uncertain. And for that matter, today is as well. We don’t know what life will bring or what surprises—good or bad—will show up at our doorsteps. But one thing is for certain: the only one you’re guaranteed to spend the rest of your life with is you. So even if you’re trying to figure out who you are and what your purpose is in life, take some time to simply enjoy the one you’re with—you!

Celebrate what makes you unique. Laugh at your own funny jokes. Look at your “flaws” from a different perspective—they may one day become your greatest assets. Begin to listen to your body and what it’s trying to communicate with you. And thank your body for supporting you through all of the ups and downs, rights and wrongs, lefts and rights. Know that there will likely be more bumps along the road in the future, but if you’re happy with who you are at this given moment, you’ll find comfort and joy in the journey ahead.
