An old Chinese proverb states, “The loss of one night’s sleep is followed by ten days of inconvenience.” Playing catch-up after a night of tossing and turning is not a fun task. Up to 48% of Americans regularly suffer with insomnia, according to the National Sleep Foundation. If you are one of those people, chances are you’ve tried one natural remedy after the other to catch your zzz’s. But you might be surprised to find a cure in your refrigerator— celery!  This vegetable can promote a good night’s sleep by bringing the body’s energy and internal temperature back into balance.

Celery is full of anti-inflammatory and cancer-fighting compounds. It can alleviate irritability, depression, and anxiety, reduce high blood pressure and cholesterol. It can also aid in digestion and weight loss. It helps soothe menopausal symptoms, and prevents gallstones or kidney stones.

Often an accessory on a vegetable plate, the versatility of this mild vegetable is often overlooked. Cooking, or blanching vegetables, makes them easier for the body to process and digest. Quickly blanching celery and then juicing it allows you to take in all of its beneficial properties. Try mixing celery juice with warm milk and raw honey. Or sauté cubed celery with fennel in this delicious recipe.

Whether juiced or sauteed, celery is a great way to gently re-balance and cleanse the body.

  6. Actually it is not a good idea to drink a celery juice just before bed, simply because of the effect of celery as a diuretic – one which makes you urinate more. Celery grows naturally in wet and damp places, as it absorbs a lot of water in its stems. This is an example of a ‘like treats like’ effect – a water plant to cure a water problem in the body.
Also, expectant mothers should take only moderate amounts of celery during their pregnancy. Celery has the ability to hasten menstruation, known as an emmenagogue, and any herb of vegetable which does this is usually best avoided during pregnancy. Pregnant women tend to urinate more than usual, so eating a lot of celery will accentuate this aspect of pregnancy.

    Regards.

  7. Have struggled with insomnia for over a year now. Decided to get some celery to munch on in evenings to help with weight loss. First night went right to sleep. That hasn’t happened for over a year. It’s been 3 nights now of fairly good sleep no drugs.

  8. Can i make celery juice using blender machine? Is there any differences in nutrition compared to using a juicer?
