What Is Real Cultivation?

There are many layers and levels of Qi. Only through sincere and dedicated Qigong practice can we move beyond the surface and begin to touch the deeper levels of essence.

This level of Qi exists at the invisible, meridian level. Meridians, or energy channels, connect all of the body’s organs and structures. They carry the intelligence and organizing power of life itself. Because they operate at the Qi level, they follow principles that are different from the physical body. The meridian network links each of us to Universal Qi. Unlike surface-level energy, this deeper Qi can not be accessed casually, it requires cultivation. To access this profound layer of healing, we must engage in refined and consistent Qigong practice.

A high-quality Qigong practice reaches the meridian level, encouraging Qi to move, accumulate, and harmonize. Qigong is a serious spiritual practice—not a religious one. Its purpose is to connect us with the dynamic consciousness of Universal Qi. Through specific postures and movements, we tap into this intelligence, beyond what words can fully explain.

Wei Qi

While beneficial, external methods such as acupuncture and herbal medicine primarily influence the more superficial layer of Qi, often referred to as Wei Qi. Wei Qi is the body’s protective energy—the first line of defense against external influences such as wind, cold, heat, and dampness.

Herbs can affect the body at this first level and can also help regulate certain conditions related to meridian function. At this stage, we are working with the basic meridians to restore harmony between the physical and energetic body. This is the first level of materialized healing—tangible, observable, and necessary.

Yet the meridians themselves are not a single pathway. They contain many layers of Qi expression. What we often feel at first is only the surface movement, while deeper levels remain hidden within the meridian system.

Reaching the Invisible

Beneath the primary channels described in acupuncture texts exist subtler dimensions of the meridians that most practitioners never reach. If one wishes to touch the invisible level—the place where true transformation can arise—external methods alone are not sufficient. Only through dedicated cultivation can the practitioner gradually enter these deeper layers and begin to sense the essence behind the movement of Qi.

This is why the ancient masters devoted decades to cultivation. If herbs and acupuncture alone could unlock the highest levels of human potential, why would they spend so many years refining themselves?

The beauty of Chinese medicine is that what appears to be a miracle often unfolds at the non-materialized level of consciousness. Healing may show itself in the body, yet its origin arises from a deeper level of consciousness.

From a Taoist perspective, anything applied from outside—even if natural—remains an external influence. It can support and nourish the environment but transformation only happens from the inside out.

Nature and the Impulse to Grow

In Spring, many people head into their gardens, seeds in hand. The steps are simple: prepare the soil, plant the seed, and let Nature do the rest. But while the outside world can provide moisture, soil, sunlight, and protection, if the seed does not carry the inner impulse to grow, nothing will happen. The environment can support growth, but it cannot create it. Real cultivation awakens the seed within.

Qigong allows the individual to develop from the inside out—to access deeper layers of the meridian system and explore the full potential of life that already exists within. What we commonly study is only the surface structure. The layers beneath it extend far beyond our current understanding.
