Called chen pi in Chinese, tangerine peel conveys many healing benefits. It helps balance the function of the Stomach and Spleen, relieves internal dampness and clears phlegm. The peel of this delicious fruit can help digestive issues, tiredness or fatigue and Lung problems, such as a cough or a full feeling in the chest.

Tangerines are available in most food markets from late October through January. Enjoy the sweet fruit and then dry and store the peels for use over the winter months. The dried peels can also be ground into a powder, mixed with honey and taken as needed. Here’s a traditional healing recipe:


Tangerine Peel Tea


Peels from 2 tangerines

4 scallions, roughly cut into 3 or 4 pieces

1 chunk of ginger root (leave the skin on and smash the piece whole)

A few almonds



Put all ingredients in a pot of water and bring them to a boil. Let the mixture boil for 2 to 4 minutes. Add brown sugar or honey and drink while hot. Adding peppermint to this tea can help scratchy throats.

Cold advice: If you have a cold, take a hot bath and drink tangerine peel tea. Then wrap yourself with warm blankets and sweat the cold out.
