June’s Full Strawberry Moon
In ancient times, people relied on Nature for their survival. As such, they developed a reverence for all living things and became keenly aware of its patterns. The monthly full moon was used as a way to track the seasons and was often named for seasonal happenings, such as foods that were in abundance or flowers that were in bloom. June’s full moon coincided with the transition from Spring to Summer as well as the ripening of wild strawberries.
Both Algonquin and European people applied the name Full Strawberry Moon to the first full moon of Summer, to indicate the ripening of “June-bearing” strawberries that were soon to be gathered.
The Tlingit and Cree named June’s moon the Egg Laying Moon and the Birth Moon. They recognized this month as a time of new life in many aspects of Nature. While eggs hatch and animals are birthed, life reaches peak perfection. Grasses turn a deep shade of green, waters flow with abundance, early fruits ripen, and the sun’s rays bring a playful, joyful spirit to all who inhabit our planet.
