It’s a brand new year in the Lunar calendar, also known as Chinese New Year. The start date of Chinese New Year changes each year, usually falling on a day between January 21 – February 20. The lunar calendar begins with the first new moon of the year and ends with the full moon. Filled with traditions and rituals, Chinese New Year is the most important and celebrated holiday in the Chinese calendar. For two weeks, business life just about comes to a halt, while the focus shifts to family, and traditions center on bringing good luck and long life.

In Chinese astrology, each zodiac year is represented by the combination of an animal sign (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig) and one of the five elements in Nature (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth). Every person is said to possess the qualities of the animal sign they are born under. 2022 is the year of the Water Tiger, which begins on February 1.

Water Element and Tiger Spirit

The Tiger is the third animal sign in the lunar calendar. Each element has a high swing and a low swing. This year’s element is on the high swing, which can work both for and against you. Energetically, Water relates to Kidney energy and supports overall energy foundation. If your Kidney energy is not strong, you may notice issues with your bladder, teeth, bones or hearing this coming year. But as with everything, you have the opportunity to use this new change to your advantage. What power this fresh start holds for all of Nature and its beings! If we can align ourselves with Nature’s energy flow, we will enjoy greater health and balance throughout the lunar cycle.

The Year of the Water Tiger brings energy and wisdom (Kidney) along with ambition and self-confidence (Tiger). With the leadership and boldness of the Tiger, and the mighty energy of the ocean (Water element), life can move and flow in incredible ways in 2022. Tigers are solitary animals that interact briefly with others. Fearless and patient, Tiger is an apex predator in its own territory. This is an opportunity to first reflect deeply and then pounce in 2022, by embracing the energy of the Water Tiger and finding the answer within. With the energy of the Water Tiger in the driver’s seat, every sign has the ability to let go of what no longer serves them in order to make room for true desires.

Much of the same can be said about the symbolism surrounding the Tiger, as it pertains to the zodiac. In Chinese culture, the Tiger is a symbol of luck. Throughout history, the Tiger ensured a healthy harvest by hunting for bore that would harm crops.  Those born under this sign are known to be natural leaders, blessed with courage, charm and confidence. The symbol of 2022 is of the Tiger crossing the river, or of a boat floating on the river. That image implies traveling, adventure, exploration, courage and a new zest for life.

While Tigers, in general, are successful, they have a tendency to challenge others and stir up controversy. This year, Tiger will need to remind itself to steer clear of distractions and focus on improving its own skills. If this advice is followed, Tiger will reap success in career ventures. Maintaining a balanced life and scheduling time into the day to spend with loved ones will nurture relationships. All zodiac signs will benefit from Tiger’s adventurous nature. In 2021, we looked to Ox for the heavy lifting. Now in 2022, we take big leaps with Tiger. In following Tiger’s strong lead, every sign will be on its way to great success.
