Chinese Zodiac 2026: What Does Your Sign Say About You?

2026: The Year of the Fire Horse and Your Zodiac Sign

The Chinese animal signs are a 12-year cycle used for dating the years. They represent a cyclical concept of time, rather than the western linear concept of time. The lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon and is constructed in a different fashion than the western solar calendar.

In the lunar calendar, the beginning of the year falls somewhere between late January and early February. The Chinese adopted the western calendar in 1911, but the lunar calendar is still used for festive occasions, such as Lunar New Year.

A popular folk method which reflected this cyclical method of recording years are the twelve animal signs. Every year is assigned an animal name or “sign” according to a repeating cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Therefore, the same animal’s name or “sign” would reappear every twelve years. The essence and Spirit of each animal helps us to see one angle of who we are. Since all of the signs are connected, all signs can learn from and influence one another.

From the Wood Snake to the Fire Horse

2025 was the Year of the Wood Snake. As a symbol of transformation, this intense and confident leader helped all signs to recognize and shed the behaviors and patterns that no longer served them, providing an opportunity for personal renewal. As the Year of the Wood Snake comes to a close, we step into the Year of the Fire Horse, much like Winter gives way to the gift of Spring.

While Snake is more methodical than Horse, both are independent, determined, and insightful. Snake has likely crafted a strategic plan to hand its reins to Horse, who is in the wings, ready and willing to take the lead. The transition this year will be seamless, as Snake’s clarity becomes the foundation for Horse’s charismatic expression of Spirit.

Since the signs rotate in a cyclical pattern, each sign and element combination comes along once every 60 years. The last Year of the Fire Horse celebration was in 1966. In this year in Japan, birth rates plummeted due to the “curse of the Fire Horse”. People believed that girls born under this sign would grow up to be hot tempered. But modern insights help us to see these beliefs simply as a reflection of social fears. Today, people born under the Fire Horse sign are seen as fearless and independent leaders who have the courage to express their viewpoints and challenge boundaries.

As we enter the year of the Fire Horse, themes of transformation, optimism, and inspiration emerge across every animal sign.

Read on to see how your animal sign will fare in 2026!

Rat

1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020

People born in the Year of the Rat are intelligent, energetic, creative, charming, resourceful, thrifty, and above all, extremely organized. Ambitious Rats are likely to be perfectionists. They work hard to achieve their goals and acquire possessions, and are often very successful. They love to gossip and have a tendency to get easily angered. But when a Rat takes a risk, it usually pays off. Quick-witted Rat can be sly and is usually able to devise clever ways to get out of predicaments.

Rat in 2025

The continuation of the Wood element in 2025 gave Rats an energetic push to deepen their own intuition. Snake’s flexibility allowed Rats to take their success to an even higher level. A healthy dose of patience allowed Rats to see and experience new perspectives and understand differing points of view.

Rat in 2026

Rat is a classic overthinker with tendencies to micromanage and choose the safest possible path. Lucky for Rat, Horse’s boundless energy nudges Rat to take more chances and simply go for it! Rats may end up feeling a bit overwhelmed by Horse’s impulsivity, but if they can trust their intuition this year, the sky is the limit!

Ox

1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021

People born in the Year of the Ox are reliable, loyal, and hardworking. They are modest and cautious, and often keep their emotions bottled up. Patience is one of their key attributes, and they often inspire confidence in others; however, they are known for their stubbornness and become very set in their ways once they decide on a course of action. Although they are not big talkers, Oxen are quite eloquent when they take the risk. On the flip side, they tend to be eccentric and easily angered, and hate to fail or be opposed.

Ox in 2025

Responsibility and consistency are two of Ox’s key characteristics. When paired with Snake’s wise decision making in 2025, Oxen had the opportunity to create a harmonious and successful professional environment. However, people born in the Year of the Ox have a tendency to be bullish and overly assertive. Adopting Snake’s flexibility helped soften Ox, so they could find success in both personal and professional relationships.

Ox in 2026

Those who know and love Oxen understand their loyalty and dedication. This will be both their challenge and saving grace this year. Oxen thrive in a steady and predictable environment. This year, Fire Horse will breathe intensity into Oxen’s regularly patterned world. Steadfast patience, focus, and organization will provide Oxen with all the resilience they need to succeed. If Oxen are open to looking at situations from new angles, they will find opportunities around every corner.

Tiger

1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022

People born in the Year of the Tiger are charming, magnetic, unpredictable, adventurous, strong, trustworthy, and independent. Historically, these natural-born leaders were held on a pedestal and viewed in the same light as emperors. Tigers often do what they please, sometimes to the detriment of those around them, yet people still flock to their sides. They tend to be intelligent, yet arrogant, and like to show off their many accomplishments.

Tiger in 2025

Tigers are more than just brave; they are larger than life. When faced with challenges, Tigers often approach a situation—even risky ones—head on with the utmost confidence. Snake and Tiger often disagree, which led to some tense moments throughout the year. Still, Snake encouraged Tiger to persevere and view defeats as stepping stones on the road to greatness.

Tiger in 2026

Tiger, Dog, and Horse are great partners, both in business and in life, making 2026 an empowering year for all three signs. Tiger’s fearlessness is heightened by Horse’s contagious energy, and both signs are grounded by dependable Dog. This year, the addition of the Fire element gives Tigers an incredible boost, encouraging them to rise to any occasion. While Tigers are natural risk takers, their challenge this year will be to slow down and listen attentively before leaping into major decisions. Having a confidant nearby will allow Tigers to balance their impulsivity with patience to achieve success, inspiring others along the way.

Rabbit

1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023

People born in the Year of the Rabbit are caring, creative, and playful, yet conservative. In business, Rabbits are talented and conscientious, and seldom lose their temper. While fond of gossip, Rabbits are trusted and admired for their tact. Over the past few years, Rabbits found themselves lucky in love and business. While Rabbits are most compatible with Dog, Pig, and Sheep, their kind and nurturing nature draws many people near. Self-care is a priority for Rabbits, so they don’t over-extend and wear themselves too thin.

Rabbit in 2025

2025 was a year of great reflection for Rabbit. Their imaginative nature paired nicely with Snake’s ability to start anew, which gave Rabbit the incredible opportunity to continually create new and joyous events. Although Rabbits may have had a negative outlook at times, they surprised themselves and others with their newfound ability to put a positive spin on whatever they encountered.

Rabbit in 2026

Rabbit’s personality is gentle and cautious, which may conflict with that of Horse, a go-getter with boundless energy. Still, this year brings Rabbits countless opportunities for growth and transformation, if they remain balanced. By lightening their load in both business and personal commitments, Rabbits will be empowered to choose which people and events deserve their energy. While life may seem chaotic at times, Rabbits will need to make a conscious choice to prioritize themselves and seek out ways to find and maintain their own inner peace. By the end of the year, Rabbits may discover that Horse’s leadership pushed them to become a bit more independent and resilient.

Dragon

1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024

People born in the Year of the Dragon are decisive, driven, confident, and charismatic. They are also short-tempered, stubborn, and easily excitable. They often seek out adventure and excitement, but through their honesty and bravery, Dragons inspire confidence and trust in others. Dragons are the luckiest animal in the zodiac, and a sign of mystery, flexibility, and transformation. As the most eccentric sign of the zodiac, Dragons are often loud and prominent. On the flip side, they tend to also be soft-hearted, giving others room to take advantage.

Dragon in 2025

2024 was the Year of the Dragon. Throughout 2025, Dragon’s Spirit remained behind Snake. Dragon’s influence and power helped propel Snake to a higher level of transformation. Although Dragon remained in the shadows, its focus was on growing its own creativity, and opening the door to self-expression, new adventures, and exciting potential.

Dragon in 2026

Regardless of the year, the Dragon is a powerful presence in the Chinese zodiac. As the only sign that can transition from the real world to the imaginary, Dragons are mysterious and fearless, with energy that cannot be contained. People born in the Year of the Dragon are confident, fiercely protective, and passionate. This year, Fire Horse’s free spirit encourages Dragons to let their creativity flow, carving out new paths for exploration and adventure. However, as Fire Horse and Dragon are both intense signs, Dragon may have a tendency to become impetuous, creating tension with friends and colleagues. Dragons must be open-minded and remind themselves to slow down and make strategic decisions.

Snake

1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025

People born in the Year of the Snake are wise, watchful, and tenacious. They are financially fortunate and never have to worry about money. Snakes say little and possess great wisdom. Although Snakes may seem cold at first, they are intense, passionate, and loving to those they get close to. Snakes have a negative quality, too—laziness. They also have a tendency to be quite vain, selfish, devious, and a bit stingy, yet they have tremendous sympathy for others and try to help those less fortunate. Snake people tend to overdo, since they have doubts about other people’s judgement and prefer to rely on themselves. Determined in whatever they do, Snakes hate to fail.

Snake in 2025

2025 was the Year of the Snake. The Dragon’s incredible guiding Spirit remained behind Snake all year, adding an additional level of intrigue and power. Snake and Dragon are both flexible and transformative. While Dragon can transform reality, Snake can transform itself! It has the remarkable ability to shed its skin and create a new body—new life. All signs benefited from Snake’s ability to begin anew. In addition, Snakes are very intelligent and strategic, while also being intuitive and introspective. This new leadership role gave Snakes the opportunity to reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as ways in which their qualities supported those around them.

Snake in 2026

Just as Dragon provided Snake a helping hand last year, Snake will do the same for Horse. As Horse leads, Snake stands in the background, quietly supporting Horse and all of the animals in the zodiac. Snake’s theme for this year is to rely on their keen instincts and trust in the process. Although many opportunities will arise for Snake this year, if they don’t act fast, they may lose out. The Fire element may be the push Snake needs to finally land a promotion or jumpstart something they’ve been dreaming of. Regardless of the challenges that arise, Snake’s flexible nature will allow them to navigate encounters gracefully while offering guidance to those who look up to them.

Horse

1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026

People born in the Year of the Horse are driven, lively, independent, honest, and exuberant. They enjoy their freedom and look for unique forms of self-expression. Cheerful and skilled with money, Horses are popular and generally perceptive. However, they are also impatient and hot-blooded, and often disregard advice from others.

Horse in 2025

With Snake at the helm, Horses had a lucky year! Wise and watchful Snake encouraged Horses to slow their impulsivity and act in a more strategic way. In turn, Horses learned that patience often brings great rewards!

Horse in 2026

2026 is the Year of the Horse! Horses are natural leaders and problem solvers, who always give 100% effort to the task at hand. This year, the intensity of the Fire element paired with Horse’s boundless energy may lead to burnout or feelings of overwhelm. However, Fire also empowers Horse to burn through old challenges and held emotions in order to start anew. While Horses are naturally free-spirited trailblazers, they often become bored with the routine of everyday life. Learning to find balance between these two extremes will lead to personal and professional success.

Sheep

1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015, 2027

People born in the Year of the Sheep are idealistic, nurturing, sensitive, elegant, and kind. Sheep are also quietly persuasive and tend to hold their emotions. They are passionate about the arts and life in general, and always follow through with what they believe in.

Sheep in 2025

Sheep are gentle and compassionate, but tend to overthink situations. In 2025, Snake encouraged Sheep to delve inward and step into the future with greater awareness and creativity. While Sheep have a tendency to rush into decisions, Snake helped them to have faith in themselves and take it one step at a time.

Sheep in 2026

True to their empathetic nature, many signs flock to Sheep for comfort and connection. While Sheep are kind and fair to all, they long for genuine relationships, and keep a fairly small circle. This year, the influence of the Fire Horse encourages Sheep to embrace new friendships and take risks in both personal and professional settings. This may create some discomfort as Sheep likes to remain in the shadows; however, Horse will give Sheep the push to be more decisive and courageous when defending their viewpoints. With this newly inspired approach, Sheep will have the opportunity to forge deeper connections with those who may not have previously recognized their unique gifts.

Monkey

1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016, 2028

Clever, scheming, and playful, people born in the Year of the Monkey like to buck the system. Their inquisitive, fun-loving, and adaptable nature—paired with their engaging personality—helped them through some difficult times in the past. Monkeys are remarkably inventive and have the ability to solve the most difficult problems with ease. While they are successful in most, if not all, of their chosen ventures, they have a discerning habit of being too agreeable. Their impatience can leave them feeling discouraged and can cause them to abandon their projects. While strong-willed, Monkeys are quick to cool down and move past the issue at hand.

Monkey in 2025

Snake’s wise and patient nature guided playful Monkey away from impulsiveness and encouraged them to think through decisions. Monkey was more strategic this year, and used its cleverness to solve problems. Monkeys even began to push past boundaries that felt too confining in favor of new adventures.

Monkey in 2026

Fire Horse’s high energy brings lots of adventure and excitement to clever Monkey this year. While Monkeys are spontaneous and always up for a challenge, they may need to rely on their problem solving abilities to help them out of some snafus. Luckily, Monkeys are able to adapt to nearly anything that life throws at them. While they may be faced with multiple opportunities, Monkeys must use their keen instincts and remain focused on the most important few to avoid feeling overwhelmed and be rewarded for their efforts.

Rooster

1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017, 2029

People born in the Year of the Rooster are reliable, honest, passionate, precise, efficient, and most notably, hardworking. These deep thinkers are capable and talented, and like to be kept busy at all times. Although they outwardly appear adventurous, Roosters are timid at heart, and often have a hard time maintaining quality relationships. They can be emotional at times and careless with money. Roosters can also be outspoken and appear selfish, but they always bring an interesting viewpoint. When they argue their position, they are most always correct.

Rooster in 2025

Rooster and Snake—two hardworking and intelligent signs—enhanced each other’s gifts and natural tendencies in 2025. Roosters had tremendous opportunities for personal growth and professional success. Although Roosters often focus on the details, they were able to see the big picture in order to achieve their larger goals.

Rooster in 2026

While Roosters have always found success working within the confines they create, Fire Horse encourages Roosters to embrace flexibility. By loosening perfectionistic tendencies and stepping outside the box, Roosters can grow in incredible ways. Experimentation is key, and as Roosters find new ways to interact with others and approach new challenges, the boundaries they’ve set begin to shift. Over time, Roosters will discover that growth comes from loosening their control and relying on their inner compass.

Dog

1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018, 2030

People born in the Year of the Dog possess the best traits of human nature, making them strong and efficient leaders that others admire greatly. Dogs are honest, empathetic, protective, affectionate, and creative. They have a deep sense of loyalty and inspire confidence in others. But Dogs are also selfish, stubborn, eccentric, and impetuous. They don’t care much about finances, but they always seem to be financially stable.

Dog in 2025

Although 2025 brought some challenges for Dogs, their resourcefulness helped them find solutions. While Dogs tend to use their instincts to protect those they love, Snake encouraged Dogs to think before acting, let go of worry, and embrace flexibility.

Dog in 2026

Dog, Tiger, and Horse are a powerful trio, making 2026 an influential year for all three signs. Dog’s loyalty and dependability keep the more energetic Tiger and Horse grounded. This year, the Fire element gives Dogs a boost, challenging them to embrace adventurous opportunities that are slightly outside their comfort zone. By welcoming this new energy, Dogs may deepen friendships and open the door to discover a new side of themselves.

 Pig

1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019, 2031

People born in the Year of the Pig are kind, honest, patient, generous, loyal, sociable, clever, and enduring. They take on projects with tremendous fortitude, honesty, and loyalty. Pigs have a small circle of friends, but these friends will stay beside them for life. With their great thirst for knowledge, Pigs are studious and well-informed. Still, Pigs do not like to debate and often shy away from arguments. While Pigs have an impulsive side, they always try their best to work out a problem quickly and efficiently, keeping kindness at the forefront.

Pig in 2025

Pigs and Snakes clashed a bit this year, placing Pig in some uncomfortable situations. Luckily, Pig sailed through these challenges with flying colors and came out more resilient. Snake also encouraged Pig to form new, lasting friendships and professional relationships built on trust, mutual respect, and a deep level of compassion.

Pig in 2026

Noble Pigs value honesty and selflessness above all else. This year, Fire Horse shakes up Pigs’ calm and stable world, pushing them to embrace change and try new experiences. In doing so, Pigs may discover foods they would have never tried before or talents they didn’t realize they possessed. Since the Fire Horse’s energy can be intense, Pigs will need to learn to say “no” to things that pull from their energy, and take time for self-care. By honoring this balance, Pigs will be able to deeply connect with what brings them joy.
