2022: The Year of the Water Tiger and Your Zodiac Sign

The Chinese animal signs are a 12-year cycle used for dating the years. They represent a cyclical concept of time, rather than the western linear concept of time. The lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon and is constructed in a different fashion than the western solar calendar.

In the lunar calendar, the beginning of the year falls somewhere between late January and early February. The Chinese adopted the western calendar in 1911, but the lunar calendar is still used for festive occasions, such as Lunar New Year.

A popular folk method which reflected this cyclical method of recording years are the Twelve Animal Signs. Every year is assigned an animal name or “sign” according to a repeating cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Therefore, the same animal’s name or “sign” would reappear every twelve years.

We’re about to enter the Year of the Water Tiger.

Read the interpretations below to see how your animal sign will fare in 2022.

Rat:

1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020

Rats are intelligent, energetic, creative, charming, resourceful and above all, extremely organized. When a Rat takes a risk, it usually pays off. This year, Rat’s life might become a bit hectic, but with a little flexibility and quick wit, Rat will rebound quickly. Rat and Tiger aren’t the best of friends, but Rat can ride the wave of the Water element for special protection in this animal sign.

Ox:

1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021

Ox is reliable, loyal and hardworking. Those born under this sign are modest and cautious and often keep their emotions bottled up. Ox will turn out to have a turbulent year due to the relationship between Ox and Tiger. Life might be far too surprising for the Ox’s liking. Given the opportunity, Ox can benefit by clearly redefining its true aspirations.

Tiger:

1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022

Tigers are charming, magnetic, unpredictable, adventurous, strong, and independent. These natural-born leaders often do what they please, sometimes to the detriment of those around them. However, Tigers have the capacity to bounce very high in all circumstances. This year, more than ever, Tigers are open to learning about the world around them, listening to the opinions of others, and exploring ways to create balance at both home and work.

Rabbit:

1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023

Rabbits are gentle, caring, creative and playful, yet reserved. Over the past two years, Rabbits found themselves lucky in love. This streak will pick back up in the last quarter of 2022. Rabbit’s calm, kind nature will give way to its tendency to nurture children, elderly, or friends in need. Rabbits will be easy to count on this year, but they must put themselves first. With patience and self-care, Rabbits will be rewarded.

Dragon:

1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012

Dragons are decisive, determined and charismatic. They often seek out adventure and excitement. Dragons are in for a treat this year, as Tiger is one of its greatest supporters. However, Tiger also likes to pressure Dragons to make them stronger and more resilient. In 2022, Dragon must demonstrate endurance and precision in work, relationships and personal growth.

Snake:

1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013

The Snake is wise, watchful and tenacious. Although a Snake may seem cold at first, it is warm and loving to those it gets close to. Snakes have a negative quality, too—laziness. If Snakes can endure this tumultuous year, the experiences and teachings they gain will carry them forward into the future. Self-nurturing will be needed in order to maintain balance in 2022. In the third quarter of the year, Snakes will emerge for all to see, dressed in new skins and shiny scales, allowing their true beauty to shine.

Horse:

1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014

The Horse can be described as driven, lively, independent, honest and exuberant. It enjoys its freedom and looks for unique forms of self-expression. The Horse and the Ox have a solid relationship, leading to many successes at the start of the year. Horse does not always jump on an opportunity, which could impede future success. If Horse is able to open the right door early on, it will lead to many future opportunities.

Sheep:

1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015

People born in the year of the Sheep are idealistic, nurturing, sensitive and kind. Sheep are also quietly persuasive and tend to hold their emotions. In 2021, Sheep gained a wealth of experience overcoming obstacles. With persistence and discipline, Sheep will be able to move forward and have great success with every project they take on in 2022.

Monkey:

1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016

Clever, scheming, and playful, Monkeys like to buck the system. That might not work in Monkey’s favor this year with Tiger in command. Monkeys will be faced with some difficult decisions in 2022. However, Monkey’s inquisitive, fun-loving and adaptable nature—paired with their engaging personality—means Monkeys will always figure out how to make a situation work in the long-run. Through it all, Monkeys will have the support of family and friends.

Rooster:

1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017

Roosters are reliable, honest, passionate, precise and efficient. But one of Rooster’s best traits is that they are hardworking. These character traits bode well for Rooster, who has a year of dynamic renewal.  Tiger challenges Roosters to update their priorities and courageously face their fears and anxieties, leading to a year of change, promise and new beginnings.

Dog:

1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018

Dogs are loyal, fair, empathetic, protective, affectionate and resourceful, while also impetuous. Like Tiger, Dogs like to walk new paths, leading to a year full of adventure. Twists and turns await around every corner as Tiger helps its friend Dog shine in 2022.

Pig:

1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019

Pigs are kind, honest, patient, generous, loyal, sociable, clever, and enduring. While  this year will bring some instability, Pigs will receive a lot of help from Tiger, helping them to maintain balance and find peace. Pigs will find that all major decisions they make in 2022 will come with a dose of good luck!
