Finding Freedom as Seasons Transition

We are born into a society with so many rules. Whether imposed or implied, there are societal boundaries, personal boundaries and professional boundaries that we must learn to live within. Yet within those limitations, we create our own free-spirited messages that we send out into the world. Perhaps we choose to follow a path of creative freedom, and allow ourselves the space to express our innermost desires. Or maybe that path is a bit more rigid with a focus on working hard to achieve financial freedom which brings the flexibility to travel and explore. However we choose to live and whomever we choose to share our lives with, we all deserve the space to find our own freedoms.

So what does freedom mean to you?

Is it freedom from worry, anxiety or fear? Is it freedom from health issues? Or is it simply some free space to find the path to your own heart?

As we move from Late Summer into Fall, we are energetically transitioning from the Stomach and Spleen to the Lung and Large Intestine. The Stomach and Spleen are our energy generators that do the heavy day-to-day processing of everything we experience–foods, sights, sounds and most importantly, emotions.

This quote from Thich Nhat Hanh is the perfect depiction of the effect that emotions have on our bodies, both energetically and physically. “Someone asked me, aren’t you afraid about the state of the world? I allowed myself to breathe and then I said, ‘What is most important is not to allow your anxiety about what happens in the world fill your heart. If your heart is filled with anxiety, you will get sick, and you will not be able to help.’ There are wars–big and small–in many places, and that can cause us to lose our peace. Anxiety is the illness of our age. We worry about ourselves, our family, our friends, our work and the state of the world. If we allow worry to fill our hearts, sooner or later we will get sick.”

We find freedom when we allow ourselves to let go.

If we are able to allow our Stomach and Spleen pair to rest a bit, instead of overworking them with the constant processing of wild emotional surges, this pair can better support the Lung and Large Intestine. If this seasonal transition is a smooth one, we can ease into the Fall season with freedom from allergies, skin conditions and excess emotions.

Regardless of how you achieve your freedom, it’s time to begin. Carve out some time just for you every day. Begin to recognize your emotions as living, breathing entities within themselves. Normalize these emotions and accept them. Feel them and then let them go. Holding onto worry, stress, anxiety or fear puts a strain on each of our organs, asking them to work overtime (and use up extra Qi) to stabilize the whole. As you let go of these emotions, replace them with peacefulness and a sense of calm. Fill your heart with love. When your heart is peaceful, your body will respond with gratitude.
